Progressive-pluralist cultural production of Sufi heritage

Sufi heritage in the Sindh region in Pakistan is in the focus of an online talk with the anthropologist Rafique Wassan on Wednesday, 23 December.

Sufi tradition contains the creative artistic expressive dimension of Islam. Centrally premised on the theosophy of the "Oneness of Existence", the intellectual knowledge tradition of Sufism tends to transcend the rigid religious boundaries and inaugurates the universal and inclusive vision of humankind and the cosmos. Influenced by critical heritage and progressive Islam framework, this talk points out the progressive-pluralist cultural production and politics of Sufi heritage in the Sindh region in Pakistan. It primarily discusses the Sufi freethinking inspired performance practice enacted by the socially progressive actors – the artists and intellectuals.

Rafique Wassan is an anthropologist and currently a Ph.D. research student at Walter Benjamin Kolleg's Graduate School of Humanities, Bern University, Switzerland. His interdisciplinary Ph.D. study project on contemporary progressive Sufi heritage discourse and performance in Sindh, Pakistan, is influenced by the anthropology of music, critical heritage and cultural studies.

The online talk is an initiative of the Platform Cultural Heritage – Cultural Production of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano and takes place from 5 to 7 pm on TEAMS. In order to participate please click this link  (also accessible via the website of the Platform).
