Are Research and Teaching Complements? Evidence from the UK
RESEARCH SEMINAR
We use data from the UK’s 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF) and the 2012-2020 Guardian University Guides (GUG) to estimate the extent to which success in research is associated with quality in teaching. We find that higher REF scores are associated with higher GUG scores. This result is robust to including university fixed effects, where a 1 standard deviation improvement in REF scores leads to approximately a 0.2 standard deviation increase in overall GUG scores.
