Competence Centre Tourism and Mobility News

What can we expect from the 2022/2023 winter season?

Ad-hoc study still shows very clear hesitancy amongmany ski vacationers

Shortly before Christmas 2022,the Competence Centre has conducted an ad-hoc study in Germany and Italy on thetravel intentions of ski vacationers for the winter 2022/2023. It wasinvestigated whether inflation / cost increases potentially lead to changes intravel volumes but also in travel behaviour (length of stay, choice ofaccommodation ...).

The results show on the one hand themood among skiers before the winter and on the other hand insights regardingthe structure of the market / vacation preferences. The results of the studywere made available to all tourism stakeholders in South Tyrol beforeChristmas.

Key findings at a glance:
-High volatility in destination choice despite satisfaction with last skivacation.

-Approx. 1/6 of ski holidaymakersare planning changes in duration and accommodation over the coming skivacation: slight tendency towards shorter stays and simpler accommodations

-While the upper income groupsplan for price increases, the lower income groups want to keep spending thesame, if possible, or even reduce it in some cases

-Almost less than half of thosewho last spent a skiing vacation in South Tyrol have already booked South Tyrolagain

-Almost a quarter of the guestswho last chose South Tyrol have already decided on another destination; thelosses will be largely compensated by changers from other ski resorts, withItaly potentially suffering losses

-The percentage of those who wantto skip the skiing vacation this year is particularly high - with financialreasons dominating

-The trend towards cheaperaccommodation (e.g., vacation apartment instead of hotel) is very clear inSouth Tyrol

When looking at travelintentions, it is important to bear in mind that special effects can lead tosignificantly different behaviour on the part of travellers. For example, thelack of snow in Switzerland, Bavaria and parts of Austria can lead to a shiftto ski regions with snow that could not have been predicted in mid-December.
